Reva unveiling New Models at Frankfurt Motor Show

Hi All,

Just to remind you that we are now present at http://wheelsguru.com/

So hope to see you all there.

Wheels Guru

REVA Electric Car Company will unveil two new models at the upcoming 63rd Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA) – REVA NXR (next revolution) and REVA NXG (next generation).

REVA NXG is a sporty two-seater with a targa roof and is designed by Dilip Chhabria of the internationally renowned automotive design company - DC Design. The car which will go into production in the year 2011 will have a top speed of 130 kmph and a range of 200 kms.

REVA NXR is a four-seat, two-door hatchback family car suitable for urban driving that can be booked and ordered from the show onwards, with production scheduled to commence at the beginning of 2010. The car will run on a Lithium Ion battery and will have a top speed of 104 kmph and a range of 160 kms on a full charge. In India the NXR will be available as a lead acid battery variant giving a range of 80 km per charge and top speed of 80 kmph.

In addition at the Frankfurt Motor Show, REVA will launch REVive technology, a feature & technology unique to REVA that addresses ‘range anxiety’ and will act like an invisible reserve fuel tank. This is the first time such a revolutionary technology is being launched that aims to quell the range anxiety in EV users and meets the lifestyle needs of today’s on-the-go consumer. If a customer runs out of charge, he/she telephones or sends a SMS message to the REVA 24/7 Customer Support Centre and a remote charge enables the REVA new models to continue driving within a few minutes.

Both the REVA NXR and the REVA NXG will feature the REVive telematics technology. Further technology and pricing announcements will be made at IAA.

Both new models will be manufactured at REVA’s new green manufacturing plant in Bangalore. The new models will receive their first boost of charge from solar power at the new plant which will be built on LEEDS guidelines with rainwater harvesting, solar charging, solar heating, and natural ventilation with an intent to reduce carbon footprint.

As the oil prices increase and depleting natural resources can we expect REVA’s new products in India in the near future? We will have to wait and see…

Maruti Suzuki launches Estilo with K-series engine and bold new design

Hi All,

Just to remind you that we are now present at http://wheelsguru.com/

So hope to see you all there.

Wheels Guru

Suzuki India Limited, country’s leading car maker, launched the Estilo with all-new overall looks and advanced technological features at a glittering ceremony here today.

The Estilo represents Maruti Suzuki matching pace with the changing taste and lifestyle of ‘Vibrant India’. The bolder new Estilo, designed to meet the aspirations of the Indian customer, is a heady-mix of sculpted features, bold designs, new exciting colours.

Leading the advanced technological features on the new Estilo are a new engine and a transmission system. Equipped with the popular 998cc K-series engine, the Estilo delivers a superior fuel efficiency of 18.2 kmpl (ARAI test results). This BSIV compliant engine makes the Estilo the second car in Maruti Suzuki stable that meets the BSIV norms much ahead of the effective date, April 2010.

The new Estilo comes with new efficient transmission technology and advanced ‘Detent pin’ gear shift mechanism for smooth and precise gear shift feeling for the customers.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Shinzo Nakanishi, Managing Director and CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited said, “The new Estilo, with a new technology engine and a new transmission, is sure to delight the customer. We are confident that the new Estilo with its bolder new design and interiors will add to the competitive edge of Maruti Suzuki in compact car segment.”

On the refreshed Estilo, that packages contemporary features and style with next generation technology, he added, “Product upgradation is an integral part of Maruti Suzuki’s business strategy and future plans. This is a way to include feedback from the customers and offer better products that match their tastes.”

The compact hatchback new Estilo is a part of the growing A2 compact segment where Maruti Suzuki is the established market leader with a market share of 58 per cent.

Superior technology Engine

The Maruti Suzuki new Estilo houses the K-series ‘K10B’ engine under the hood. The 998cc three-cylinder engine delivers a power of 68 PS@ 6200rpm and a higher torque of 90Nm @ 3500rpm. The improved engine technology enables more power, low NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) and the lighter weight of the engine helps to increase the fuel efficiency with lower emissions. The new Estilo comes with ARAI certified fuel efficiency of 18.2 kmpl.

Technical highlights of the K10B engine include DOHC (Double Overhead Cam shaft) with offset crank shaft, resulting in better volumetric efficiency, improved power and FE, high compression ratio, plastic intake manifolds for reducing weight and suction losses, Smart Distributor-less ignition (SDLi) system with dedicated plug top coils and advanced injector for superior atomization. The engine oil in the new technology K10B engine is required to be changed only after 10,000 km thus lowering the running cost.

Environment friendly

The new Estilo is the second model from the Maruti Suzuki stable which is BSIV compliant, thanks to the K series engine. The Estilo is also ELV compliant and 89% of the parts are environment friendly meeting ELV norms. Further, to take on the forthcoming norms of 10% Ethanol blending of petrol, the new Estilo is also E-10 compliant. Maruti Suzuki is bringing these environment-friendly features to its range of cars much ahead of the industry adopting these norms.

Superior Transmission

A new transmission technology and a number of innovations make the new Estilo a combination of power and pleasure.

The new Estilo comes with a new Cable-type transmission technology. The five-speed manual gear with synchromesh is now changed to Cable type as against Rod-type, mechanical transmission earlier. This new transmission reduces the gear shifting effort in the new Estilo, by reducing mechanical losses.

The new Estilo has been fitted with an advanced ‘detent pin’ gear shift and select mechanism. This mechanism eliminates the sliding friction (or line contact) between parts and provides rolling friction (or point contact). This technology, in turn, facilitates smoother transition of gears, and is a first among all Maruti Suzuki products.

These engineering changes, based on customer feedback, provide gear shift assistance for the driver (the gear smoothly goes into its position with minimal effort of the driver). The mechanism reduces the friction and hysteresis losses, thereby proving smooth and precise shifting of gears. It also removes the feeling of stickiness during gear shift process.

Safety, Security & Comfort

The new Estilo is high on safety, security and comfort.

Improved occupant safety in the form of increase in the frontal impact absorbing area, as the distance between steering wheel and front bumper is increased.

The VXi variant comes equipped with front and rear fog lamps, rear wiper and washer. Safety features like Airbag (driver side) and ABS are provided as option in the VXi variant.

In terms of vehicle security the VXi variant comes with i-CATS integrated keys, five-door central locking and anti-theft alarm.

Rear parcel shelf adds to the passenger convenience and comfort in the VXi variant. Based on customer feedback, the suspension of the new Estilo has been fine tuned to provide improved ride and handling.

Compact and Convenient

The new Estilo has got a minimum ground clearance of 165 mm and wheelbase of 2360 mm. The tight turning radius of 4.6 meters makes the Estilo a favored car in tight parking and driving conditions.

Vibrant design, styling and looks

In its refreshed avatar, the new Estilo flaunts expressive, bold frontline looks owing to new swept-back headlamps, dynamic front and rear bumpers, sculpted fog lamp surrounds and a new hood design with crease lines. The rich chrome detailing in the grille and the stylish wheel covers add to the premium feel and the overall appeal of the vehicle. The side door mouldings and ORVM’s have been given a new design to add to the bold looks.

The interiors of the new Estilo have been done up in a posh-looking two-tone beige/chocolate brown complimentary combination, which adds to the refreshing feel inside the vehicle. The seat-covers, embossed with new organically designed geometric patterns heighten the posh looks of the car’s interiors.

The dash-board is in a dual tone chocolate brown and beige combination with new attractive and bright silver accent prominently on the center console, instruments cluster, steering wheel, AC louvers and gear knob. The instrument panel has an all new design speedometer, digital fuel level indicator and multi-function display.

Vivacious new colours

The new Estilo is available in three exciting variants: LX, LXi and VXi in four brand new colours:

Ecru Blue, Emerald Blue, Dusky Brown, Quantum Orange.

Price: Introductory Prices of Maruti Suzuki Estilo(Ex-Showroom) in NEW DELHI are:

* LX Rs 3.12 Lakhs
* LXi Rs 3.40 Lakhs
* VXi Rs 3.66 Lakhs

Hero Honda bullish on the competition

Hi All,

Just to remind you that we are now present at http://wheelsguru.com/

So hope to see you all there.

Wheels Guru

HERO HONDA finally realized that they have to upgrade their bike (Karizma) which was launched in 2003 since then the bike had the same technology without upgrade for six years, it was lagging behind with the likes of YAMAHA R15, BAJAJ PULSAR 220 and TVS Apache 180 .

HERO HONDA is testing the new Karizma (pic courtesy of Autobild Magazine) which is expected to go on sale by September. As expected the new Karizma gets cosmetic styling changes in front fairing and rear cowl. It might also get a LED tail lamp cluster as in CBZ Xtreme and a new exhaust. The new Karizma will also get gas charged reservoir suspension as in the Hunk. However whether the new Karizma is Fuel Injected or not we cannot confirm now. But what we can say you is the new Karizma gets a rear disc brake. The need for disc brake might be because of upward revising of power and torque ratings.

We will have to wait and see if this move by Hero Honda actually does any good for them

Tips to Take Care of Motorcycle Chain

Hi All,

Just to remind you that we are now present at http://wheelsguru.com/

So hope to see you all there.

Wheels Guru

A very important two wheeler part that sometimes creates problem and requires special attention is the motorcycle chain. Made of metal based rings, motorcycle chain functions to transmit power to the rear wheel.

Due to excessive usage, hours of continuous functioning or lack of maintenance, the motorcycle chains either wear out or become loose. The basic idea about motorcycle chains, their functioning and few maintenance tips would help to take care of the motorcycle chains.

How often should the motorcycle chain be inspected?

It is mostly recommended that one should follow the automakers' instructions that comes in the motorbike manual. Auto Repair Experts suggest that motorcycle chains should be inspected after the motorbike runs for every 1000 - 1200 kilometers. The inspection period might vary if the motorcycle is used aggressively or rider has a habit of rash riding. Rash driving leads to worn out chain.

Chain Maintenance involves the following attentions:
  • Inspection
  • Replacement
  • Cleaning
  • Wiping
  • Lubrication
  • Adjustment
  • Tightening

Periodical Inspection

- Motorcycle Chain
Ensure that the motorcycle chain is able to move roughly up and down easily. The approximate measure for the chain to move should be one inch both ways. One can either have a visual idea or can manually measure the chain with a measuring tape.

One needs to check the motorcycle chain at all the spots and sections.

Motorcycle chain if found to be loose, need to be tightened. Ask an auto repair mechanic to do that for you.

In case, the chain is too tight, it needs repair or moreover replacement is always a better option.

- Check the Motorcycle's Sprockets

It is important to check the motorcycle sprockets because its teeth can clearly indicate that the chains are not properly adjusted. Closely observe these teeth and ensure that they mesh well with the motorcycle chain.

If you find the sides of teeth to be worn out, this is a clear indication that the chain and teeth are not meshing well. New motorcycle sprockets will help to get rid of this problem.

Inspection

Wiping and cleaning is always a suggested task that would help to keep any man, machine or automobile well functioning. Clean and well-lubricated motorcycle chain helps in smooth motor riding.

Always use o-ring approved cleaning agent to clean the dust and dirt off the chain. Using a soft brush for applying and rubbing off dirt is preferred.

Make sure the excess of grime from the chain links and all sprocket teeth is also wiped off with the use of a soft piece of cloth.

Lubrication

Now that cleaning of teeth and chain is done, it is important that chain should be lubricated for a smooth drive. Use superior quality lubricant and try spraying it smoothly over the chain.

Rotate the motorcycle wheels to properly lubricate the motorcycle chain.

Adjusting the Chain

Now its time for adjusting chain tension that is the to adjust the alignment of the motorcycle chain. There is a certain set distance between the front sprockets and rear sprockets. This distance needs to be adjusted. One can test whether the chain tension has been adjusted or not. This can be done by moving the chain up and down. If it moves till 1 inches, then the chain tension has been adjusted.

Tightening

Your maintenance work is done. All you need to do is to evenly tighten the rear axle so that both sides are perfectly aligned. Make sure to properly align the motorcycle chain and sprockets.

Before starting the maintenance and inspection work, make sure you have all the apt motorcycle tools with you. Follow these maintenance tips to take care of your motorcycle chains that might affect smooth functioning of the motorbike. Care and caution will keep you safe and your driving experience a smoother & enjoyable one.

These small steps in our day to day life can help in the long term maintenance of your two wheels

Imported cars are being assembled in India illegally to Evade duties

The special squad of Deputy Commissioner of Police Niket Kaushik, Zone IX, which recently busted a gang selling imported bikes after evading duties, has now learnt that the gang is also involved in a racket of assembling luxury cars locally.

A few days ago, the squad seized some super bikes from the suburbs that had been assembled in India with imported parts, and arrested one Kunjan Chaudhuri.

Investigations now reveal that the gang is also involved in importing parts of luxury cars and assembling the vehicles locally. By doing so, it works out comparatively cheaper, as they avoid paying Customs duty.

“We are identifying all those who have bought vehicles from such people. Our investigations have revealed that the gang is also involved in selling fourwheelers using forged documents,” said Kaushik.

The special squad, apart from imported bikes, is also checking out imported cars in Mumbai. According to the police, the kingpin of the racket, Nadir Ali, is based in Dubai, and they suspect he must have sold many vehicles to businessman and Bollywood personalities.

The parts are bought from countries like Singapore to Mumbai. Some members of the gang are experts in assembling the vehicles, and they also forge documents before selling the vehicles at a cheaper rate to high-end customers.

Maruti Suzuki ready with the heart of Ritz

Maruti Suzuki, unveils the all-new K12M engine for its soon-to-be-launched hatchback Ritz in its Gurgaon plant. K12M engine is BS-IV compliant and this is the first time that a BS-IV compliant engine will power any Passenger car in the country.

Ritz will be fitted with this all new four cylinder, 1197cc all aluminum engine, which will produce 85 BHP at 6000 RPM and 113 NM of Torque at 4500 RPM. The is relatively higher on the revs due to its shorter strokes of 71.5mm as compared to its bore which is 73mm and hence the power-band is peaky at 6000 RPM.

The engine will run on a Semi Synthetic engine oil providing improved changeover time from 1,000 km to 10,000 km. Another added technological advancement is the use of the timing chain instead of the conventional belt design which hinders performance and durability of the engine.

“The K12M engine is another example of Maruti Suzuki’s commitment to take engine technology in India to the next level. The K12M engine further strengthens Maruti Suzuki’s efforts for fuel efficient, green engine technology for Indian customers,” Shinzo Nakanishi, Managing Director and Chief Executive of Maruti Suzuki said”

The engine promises to be a best in class fuel efficient, high performance, low emission, light weight, with lower NVH (Noise, Vibration & Harshness). Casey Stoner's Night-hunt at Arabian soil

It was Casey Stoner who took the headlines with a perfect race and a third consecutive win on the Losail race circuit in the rescheduled MotoGP race this Monday night. He dominated the entire race from the starting grid to the finish line, leaving a second place Valentino Rossi a massive 7.771 seconds behind.

The opening MotoGP contest of the year in the Arabian desert, the first race in the new single tyre supplier era, but it was a familiar story with Stoner crossing the line first, ahead of World Champion Valentino Rossi.

Rossi never got closer than 1.9sec and then started to fade. Rossi would later say that his front tire started to ruin and it was slow down or crash out, also adding that he lost time in the begining of the race.

Lorenzo took third place on the podium staying behind with over 8 seconds from Rossi and 16.244 from Stoner.

After being passed by Rossi, Lorris Capirossi was passed by Lorenzo and Andrea Dovizioso, and then on the eigth lap lost his front and crashed out and was unable to rejoin the race. The Italian Rizla Suzuki Rider felt sorry for his team, that all the pre season efforts that had been put in went waste due to his crash and he could not score any points.

Dovizioso was fifth after losing fourth place to Colin Edwards on lap 14.

A good perfomance by Alex De Angelis, but his position may be contested by the race direction after hitting Dani Pedrosa’s Honda, who despite the considerable force of the hit managed to hang on, but seemed considerably shaken by the incident, considering he was riding at 60/70% fitness after his recent wrist and knee surgery. Pedrosa had fought his way up from 14th to 6th and after the incident was passed by several other riders and finished 11th. Pedrosa after the incident was seen not sliding his knee that much down as compared to earlier making him lose valuable time and position in the race as well as confirming injury to have escalated.

Second Malboro Ducati rider Nicky Hayden also riding injured after his crash during qualifying, finished 12th just behind Pedrosa.

Vermeulen on his Suzuki took home seventh position, and rookie Mika Kallio, second best Ducati rider 8th. Toni Elias on his San Carlo Gresini spec Honda was 9th and Randy de Puniet without his Playboy livery, completed the top ten.

Behind Hayden, returning Sete Gibernau on his Ducati finished 13th while Marco Melandri debuting the Hayate, formerly known as Kawasaki, took a trip into the gravel trap in the first lap but managed to get back in the race and finish 14th in front of Yuki Takahashi, Monster Yamaha Tech 3 rider James Toseland, who also ran off track was 16th and rookie Pramac rider Niccolò Canepa, 17th.

With the diesel engine Skoda once again stands by their claim to offer cars with the best technology and fuel efficiency and with the new 3.6L V6 will set new records in power and performance and also bring to India, the first 4×4 wheel drive in its segment.”

Buy and Sell pre owned cars at Chevrolet OK

General Motors India has launched its Chevrolet OK Cars program to buy and sell pre-owned cars. The Chevrolet OK network of outlets is being rolled out nationally in a phased manner and will also buy all popular brands of cars in exchange for the sale of new cars from the Chevrolet stable. The pre-owned program from Chevrolet has since become operational in 9 outlets across 6 cities, with three outlets in Delhi and NCR, two outlets in Mumbai and one each in Pune, Hyderabad, Jalandhar and Ludhiana. The Chevrolet OK program will expand to 30 country-wide outlets by this year-end.

“With Chevrolet-OK Cars, GM India plans to set up a country-wide network of branded, pre-owned car sales outlets to offer our valued customers an experience very similar to buying a new car. The program will offer our customers mechanically and physically sound pre-owned cars, which will first be certified by highly qualified GM India-trained engineers after passing through a system of stringent checks and refurbishment,” P. Balendran, Vice President, GM India, said.

The cars offered through CHEVROLET OK, outlets will go through a strict, 110-point checklist by GM India trained engineers, a thorough vehicle reconditioning program, besides a detailed history check. Chevrolet OK Cars will be sold with a 1-year/15,000 km limited warranty, along with three labour-free services for Chevrolet cars.

The program will also provide an opportunity for additional revenue to GM India’s dealers across the nation and ensure the quality of pre-owned cars available to the customer. General Motors India, is in the process of appointing more dealers and authorized service outlets in urban and semi-urban cities to widen its network and reach out to its valued customers across the nation. GM India’s rapidly growing network of Chevrolet dealerships and service centres include 170 authorized sales points and 177 service outlets, while more are in the pipeline to support the increasing market demand for its products.

The innitiative from Chevrolet is a following move after the similar innitiatives taken their compettitors in India. Looking at the market structure and the number of Chevrolet cars present in the market, this innitiative might stay restricted.

PERFORMANCE & SPECIFICATIONS

Performance: The 2-cylinder engine – delivering 35 PS @ 5250 rpm and a torque of 48 Nm @ 3000 rpm – enables the car to have a top speed of 105 kmph and negotiate inclines with a gradeability of 30%.

Fuel efficiency: 23.6 km/litre, certified by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) under mandated test conditions, which is the highest for any petrol car in India.

Safety: The Tata Nano’s safety performance exceeds current regulatory requirements – it passes the roll-over test and offset impact, which are not regulated in India. It has an all sheet-metal body, reinforced passenger compartment, crumple zones, intrusion-resistant doors, besides mandatory seat belts and complies fully with existing Indian safety standards. Tubeless tyres – among which the rear ones are wider endowing extra stability – enhance safety.

Top Gear Russia with Nikolai Fomenko, Mikhail Petrovsky, Oskar Kuchera

Top Gear Russia is a motoring television series on Ren-TV based on the BBC series. It premiered on 22 February 2009

The Russian version suffers from similar issues to the Australian Top Gear. Trying too hard to be like the original, and not enough unique new concepts brought to the show.

Still, it remains to be seen what the show’s intended audience thinks of it. No doubt all the backwards letters make more sense to them than they did to us.

As a matter of fact they even showed one product used earlier in UK - Top Gear.
